Bram Stoker having published it in 1897, Dracula has been around for over 200 years. While many works written in the same time period are nonexistent today, Stoker wrote a masterpiece still distributed furiously throughout the world. Many of the things that make Dracula effective are the same things that audiences cry out for in contemporary entertainment. One appealing attribute the book has is its suspenseful nature. Stoker creates terror in his audiences with his development of the characters in his book. Count Dracula holds the ability to not only terrify his victims but to also scare the reader out of his / her mind.
Stokers talent with developing his characters is well displayed through the suspenseful circumstances that surround each one of them. Other than suspense, Stoker gained popularity with his association to evil and dark forces. People are always intrigued by the unknown and are drawn to Dracula because of this. Although few people would associate themselves with the presence of evil described in the novel, it is fascinating for them to read about it. Stoker profited from this flaw human nature, and the book has been a great success. Finally, Bram Stokers use of sexual references and bloody gore are probably the most effective tools in gaining his audience.
Although it has created major controversy, people today flock to anything involving sex and graphic violence. This can also be proved by analyzing the most popular movies in todays world. Nine out of ten are given an R rating due to extreme content. Some individuals feel a movie is not worth watching if it is not rated R because people are ultimately attracted to graphic language, violence, and behavior. Whether purposely or accidentally done, Bram Stoker created a novel which is still very effective after 200 years of distribution. In my opinion, Dracula will remain popular as long as its readers are attracted to the issues highlighted in the book.
