I found Edgar Allan Poe s writings to be both interesting and fascinating. Poe s stories and poems leave the reader with a sense of fear, uncertainty and death. I enjoyed reading the stories that explored the darker sides of its characters. In The Raven, The Cask of Amontillado and The Fall of the House of Usher the reader senses that something terrible is going to happen in the beginning of these writings.
In some of Poe s writings, one finds a sense of passion and affection. In Annabelle Lee, one feels the strong devotion and undying love for Annabelle. In Ligeia, you feel deep love and compassion for Ligeia by the desperation in which he must see her again. One also senses the fear, depression and heartache in losing the love of one s life. In The Fall of the House of Usher the story is based on one s fears and how they are dealt with. Roderick and Madeline let their fears take over their lives and they both become insane.
When Madeline appears to be dead and is placed in the burial vault, Roderick s insanity becomes more evident as described in the narrator s quote He roamed from chamber to chamber with hurried, unequal and objectless step. The pallor of his countenance has assumed, if possible, a more ghastly hue. As Roderick and the narrator discuss the eerie sounds coming from within the house, which Roderick predicts is Madeline escaping from the burial vault, the narrator s personal fears begin to surface. When Madeline is reaches the doorway and then falls on Roderick causing them both to die from immense fear, the narrator lets fear take over and insanity sets in as the narrator flees to escape the house of Usher. In The Fall of the House of Usher, I feel that Poe is trying to show the importance of facing and conquering one s fears. Poe suggests that when someone constantly conceals his or her fears, it may lead to insanity.
I believe it is better to confront and conquer one s fears rather than to let fears consume and destroy one s sanity and life.
