This story contains characters that display the characteristic of integrity well, and some who choose not to display it at all. The ones that show signs of integrity have their own ways and forms of doing so. I feel that Atticus exemplifies the quality of integrity to the fullest he possibly can. After having his wife die, that left him to be the main role model for his two young children to follow. He showed his children an excellent way of dealing with the case of Tom Robinson.
He dealt with the case not only with integrity but also with righteousness. The town in which the story takes place has a great prejudice toward blacks. It was honorable for Atticus to take the case of Tom Robinson, a black man. Every man has the right to a lawyer, and it was Atticus? s duty to fulfill the request for Toms case to the fullest of his ability. Another way in which Atticus demonstrated integrity was in the situation of the death of Bob Ewell.
It was yet a mystery to Atticus of how Mr. Ewell died, and with the chance of his son having part in it, he wished not to hush about it. Mr. Tate tried telling Atticus that Bob Ewell fell on the knife and killed himself, and that Jem probably had no part in it. This, however, was not enough for Atticus. He did not want anyone to call him a liar or such.
Mr. Dolphus Raymond also displayed integrity, but in a different way. Mr. Dolphus has some black children and he is a white man.
The county rejects him for having black-white children. And the children are not accepted by either racial group. Mr. Dolphus is rejected by the county of Maycomb because of his actions. He is aware of what he does, but he feels that blacks are people too, and should be treated with equality. The people in town do not understand this so Dolphus pretends to be an alcoholic, when in actuality he is only drinking Coca-Cola out of a bag.
So when the people in town see him drinking? whiskey? like this, it gives them a reason why he lives the way he does. This may not be completely honest about him, but he has to do it to keep peace.
The situations stated about Atticus and Dolphus Raymond give two different approaches of displaying integrity with the similar feature of prejudice. Neither of these individuals has it in them
