In, The House On Mango Street, by Sandra Cisneros, the author has efficiently placed superior symbols throughout the novel, and if a reader thoroughly combs through each page, symbols become apparently noticeable. Primarily, Mamas hair represents beauty and comfort. In addition, women represent captivity and wasted dreams. Lastly, Cathy, the queen of cats exemplifies hopeful imagination and the upper class. All three of these themes are used in the book to point to the novels main idea, growing up in the poverty Mamas hair is used to describe Esperanza's feeling of contentment and beauty towards her mother. Early in the book, specifically the chapter named Hair, Mamas hair is described as, ...

sweet to put your nose into when she is holding you, holding you and you feel safe. Giving you the impression that her mothers hair is comforting to be near. In the ghastly neighborhood that Esperanza has grown up in, she has found one comforting place to be. While knowing this, Cisneros is subconsciously telling us she loves her mother and feels safe while she is near her, while never directly saying, I love my mom and feel incredibly safe when Im near her. Esperanza also finds her mothers hair beautiful, ... my mothers hair, my mothers hair, like little rosettes, like little candy circles all curly and pretty...

She has portrayed her mother as a beautiful lady. Esperanza has a habit of making judgments on everybody in the book, showing the reader what is wrong with them. But not her mother. To Esperanza, her mother is almost holy, the most natural, breathtaking lady on the block.

She stands for the one little flower growing amongst an acre of weeds, the only diamond in a barrel full of pebbles. Women have played a big part in the symbolic meaning of captivity and wasted dreams. Women in this neighborhood are treated very poorly. Locked up in their house with no other options but cleaning, cooking, and taking abuse from husbands, may it be verbal, physiological, or physical.

Esperanza, I have inherited her name, but I dont want to inherit her place by the window. Esperanza is speaking of her grandmother, who was taken away by her husband, and ended up locked in her house, caged like an animal. Many women, the reader is introduced to, end up this way; Esperanza's grandmother, Sally, Rafael, Alicia, and Minerva. All these women are held captive in their own home. By husbands who will not let them go anywhere or speak to anyone. Esperanza has made every decision not to end up like her grandmother, or any of these girls.

Women also exemplify wasted dreams. Many women in the book had special talents, or beauty. But all dreams disappeared when they were handed their mothers rolling pin, and forced to marry. Again, Esperanza's grandmother is the perfect example, I wonder if she made the best of what she got or was she sorry she couldnt be all the things she wanted to be. these women, as the reader is told, had something special about them.

But, all that was taken away. At the snap of a finger. This makes Esperanza even more sure of her path towards independence. Lastly, Cathy, the queen of cats represents the upper class and imagination. Even though no one on Mango Street is in the upper class, there are those who are better off. Cathy, who is not as poor off as Esperanza, looks down on her.

Esperanza says, then as if she forgot I had just moved in, she says that the neighborhood is getting bad. Cathy says this as if people like Esperanza are ruining the neighborhood. Unfortunately there are many people who feel this way. Cathy is almost speaking for all of the upper class by saying Esperanza's family is not wanted. Cathy, on the other hand, also stands for imagination. I am the great grand cousin of the queen of France!

Of course, most likely, she is not. But, she shows Esperanza that having an imagination can be fun. Not everything is always serious. The message that Cathy is sending to Esperanza is a very important one: Even if you are an adult, that doesnt mean that your imagination has to All of these symbols are very well portrayed n the novel, and it is the job of the reader to find them so a true sense of the authors theme is sensed.

Whether the symbol is a simplistically beautiful mother, a woman lost in a cruel world, or a women who has a bright imagination, all these symbols have helped a young girl grow up in the poverty Bibliography:
