Martin Luther King Martin Luther King, Jr. was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on January 15, 1929. He grew up in a deeply religious home, like his father and maternal grandfather. In 1948, at the age of 19, he completed a degree in liberal arts at Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. He graduated from Cover Technical Seminary, near Philadelphia, in 1951, and received his Ph. D.
from Boston University in 1955. He married Coretta Scott in 1953 and the next year became a pastor at a church in Montgom-ery, Alabama. Dr. King lead a successful boycott of the of the segregated city bus system in Montgomery. Today it is clear that the boycott sparked the beginnings of the national civil rights movement. It was at this point in his career that King developed strategy to have a fundamental change in race relations in this country.
From past experiences with religious beliefs, King felt that real progress toward racial equality could be made only through nonviolent confrontations of injustice. King organized the Southern Christian Leadership Confer-ence, and also became co-pastor (with his father) of the Ebenezer Baptist Church, in Atlanta in 1957. He soon began to speak in many parts of the South, always urging blacks to nonviolent opposition to racial segregation and he was often jailed, stoned, and beaten for his efforts. In his Letter from the Birmingham Jail in 1963, he wrote: I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tell him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for the law.
Near the end of he Birmingham campaign, in an effort to draw together the multiple forces for peaceful change and to dramatize to the nation and to the world the importance of solving the u. s. racial problem, King joined other civil rights leaders in organic-ing the Historic March in Washington. On August 28, 1963, an inter-asian assembly for more than 200, 000 gathered peaceably inthe shadow of Lincoln Memorial to demand equal justice for all citizens under the law. Here the crowds were uplifted by the emotional strength and prophetic quality of Kings I Have a Dream speech, based on biblical phraseology People often wonder whether the spirit of nonviolence flowed naturally through Martin or was it from his parents and grandpa-ents. Dr.
Martins dad tells a story about, one day his mother gave him a pail and told him to go get some water. He had filled the pail and was on his way home when a white man stopped him and said, Hey, boy, give me that water. Daddy King said, I cant. My mamma told me to bring it to her. The white man insisted, Boy, I said give me that pail. Daddy King replied, Im not gonna do it.
The white man pulled him close to him, ripped his close off, stripped him until he was naked, and beat him. When Daddy King went and told his mother the first thing she said was, You must swear to me that you will not tell your papa about this. She then picked a club up and went to and beat the man herself. At one point the Kings were driven off the land for a time. They were hunted, and they lived the woods for weeks, until finally the crisis blew over. As yuan see, the spirit of nonviolence was not inherited from Martins family.
What was so amazing is that Martins father used to always say You must stand up for your rights I believe that the blacks deserve better treatment then they get now days as well as back then.
