ELECTRICITY ESSAY The Powerline Controversy There has been a great scientific uproar lately about the link between powerlines and EMF (Electro-Magnetic Fields, generated by all electrical appliances) and Leukemia and other types of cancers. Some scientists suggest that people living near powerlines and a lot of electrical appliances are two or even more times likely to get cancer than people that dont live near as many sources of EMF. Though it hasnt been fully proven, scientists keep researching in hope of one day proving their point flawlessly. But what is the real truth? This is a much debated topic, and not just by scientists.
Electrical and appliance companies have gotten involved too, for the obvious reasons. Electrical power companies deny all fact that their powerlines cause cancer causing EM fields and appliance companies try to sell their products better by advertising their products as low EMF radiation capable. This topic came up in 1979 when two scientists (Nancy Wertheimer and Ed Leeper) first observed that children with leukemia have another thing in common, living near powerlines and other high sources of EMF radiation. These scientists were first laughed at and their finding were discounted, but the idea caused some uproar in other scientists. A couple of years later, few scientists set out to research this topic deeper and give detailed information and not just predictions, in hope of this topic being taken more seriously.
The readings inside the cancer victims houses didnt seem to agree with the readings of wire coding, so the scientists found themselves in a bit of a confusion. Some felt that it is the EMF that causes leukemia and other types of cancers, and others think that EMF just increases the risk, while others seem to believe it to be just a coincidence. In another article, scientists went to the house of the children with leukemia and said that the kids were exposed to five times the normal amount of EMF, which caused their leukemia. However, the effect only seemed to happen to the children. Maybe its because children have a lower immune system, or maybe the kids were doing something they shouldnt have been with the wires. The electrical companies seem to be clinging to the latter one for their reasons why theyre discounting these analyses It is very hard for one to decide what to believe just by reading these articles.
They seem to be contradicting each other quite a lot, and each side has a good point, but neither has a strong one. Everything electric today emits radioactivity, and that is indisputable. So by saying that long exposure to EMF is going to cause cancer, is like saying a long time underwater will result in a person drowning. However, some things seem to emit a lot more EMF, which would take a lot less time to develop cancer than if you didnt live near those things. I do believe that living near high power powerlines can not be a good thing and that it may cause cancer. The unfortunate thing is that, until scientists gather enough proof to prove their point to everyone, people will continues to suffer from this phenomenon called EMF.
