The death penalty has been an ongoing debate for many years. The following essay will not solve the issue either; I will only try to persuade the readers to agree with my point of view. The death penalty in Texas has both supporters and non-supporters. I believe that the death penalty is a must, especially in today s society. With the increase in vicious crimes today, we must act just as harsh with our justice system to try and deter these types of crimes. Non-supporters argue that the death penalty is inhumane and should be considered murder.
This I do not agree with, for the simple fact that people of this malicious caliber must be dealt with in the same way, an eye for an eye. True, putting these criminals to death doesn t solve the crime that they committed; it is not supposed to. By using the death penalty as a type of punishment, it will in the future deter other criminals from committing similar crimes and eventually make our society a much better place to live. Monetarily, it is probably cheaper to house these criminals in prison cells for the rest of their lives than it is to put them to death, but this only gives criminals more incentive to commit heinous acts of violence. Due to the ridiculous amounts of appeals these criminals are allowed our system stays tied up monetarily and time wise for years. Criminals should only be given a select amount of appeals.
Most criminals on death row are kept alive up to 25 years after they have committed their crimes before they are put to death. To me this seems ridiculous, especially from a taxpayer s point of view. Our justice system must stay harsh and even become stricter toward these criminals to ward off this type of behavior in our society. The bottom line regarding the death penalty is: the justice system must remain tough and punish criminals to the fullest extent to send the message that this type of behavior is not acceptable in our society. Anti-death penalty activists express their dislike throughout the country. Their belief is that this type of punishment should be abolished.
I f we were to abolish the death penalty, vicious crimes such as murder would without a doubt increase, and our prison systems would overflow. These activists would then complain about the government building a new prison in their neighborhood to house the criminals that they saved. This debate will continue for years to come, but all the while this penalty will remain intact.
