The After-Effects of the Chernobyl Accident Some of the most significant effects of the Chernobyl accident are radiation sickness disease and radio phobia. Chronic radiation sickness disease is a disease that progresses as a result of division of cells under the short influence (up to several days) of ionizing radiation. After the explosion in Chernobyl, hundreds of people received large doses of radioactive irradiation, causing acute sickness disease. The most abundant diseases in post-Chernobyl zones are all kinds of cancers (especially thyroid gland cancer), leucosis, malignant tumor and tuberculosis. All of these diseases have been diagnosed ten times more frequently after the accident.
Today, 638, 000 people are diagnosed with leucosis and thyroid gland cancer as a result of Chernobyl accident. Radio phobia refers to fear of irradiation and radiation sickness disease. After the accident this phobia has spread all over post-Chernobyl Ukraine. People were and still are afraid to buy products without measuring their levels of radiation; there is a panic fear of precipitations; fear of all electronic devices, etc. An international report Proceedings of the Royal Society: Biological Sciences has indicated that there were seven times more mutations in genes of the children of those affected by the Chernobyl accident, than in other childrens genes. Interestingly, the later after leaving Chernobyl a child was born, the fewer mutations his / her genes contained.
Scientists explain that parents bodies were recovering of irradiation more and more each year after the accident. In addition, it was impossible for many to conceive and save pregnancies as a result of natural selection, which eliminated damaged eggs and sperm. Many stalkers (people who still live in Chernobyl zone) can literally smell the radiation. They say it smells like freshness right after the storm. Stalkers usually have serious problems with bones and teeth (loss of calcium), chronic headaches and weak legs and loose eye-sight. It has been almost 22 years since the Chernobyl accident and people of the affected zones can still feel the consequences of it.
The effects are numerous: from human health to environmental issues. Nevertheless, even today the Chernobyl reactor still poses danger: the sarcophagus built over it 20 years ago already contains many holes and cracks, which may cause radiation leakages.
